A lidded baleen basket with swan finial made by Inupiaq artist Elijah Attungana. Elijah was born in Point Hope, Alaska. Attungana’s basketry reflects stylistic elements common to the village of Point Hope, particularly the wide wefts, cylindrical shaped bodies, and flat-topped lids. More commonly made by male weavers, baleen baskets are constructed from baleen harvested from the bowhead whale. Baleen baskets are made using a coiling method of basketry making where wefts of baleen are sewn around warps of coiled rod. Each baleen baskets are mostly lidded baskets coiled around a perforated bone or ivory starter piece for the base, and a carved ivory or bone finial for the lid. Carved motifs on the finial vary widely, often depicting animals or common features of Northern Alaskan life. This basket is constructed in a unique tiered cylindrical shape with a flat-topped lid. The body of the basket is made with a single rod coiled technique with a wide weft of baleen stitches sewn around the coil. Each tier of the basket body is wrapped with light baleen. The flat perforated starter piece on the base of the basket sits flush with the basket. The lid is fashioned with a flanged ivory finial carved to depict a swan.
