Shaman’s Hands, one of twelve prints in the 1998 annual collection, distills her signature blend of the loosely naturalistic and the gleefully bizarre. The shaman emerges from beneath an oversized hood, its outline uncannily echoing his own face, with disembodied hands floating like ghostly gloves and a bare torso that abruptly ends mid-waist. His face and chest bear the texture of scars or wrinkles, giving him the curious quality of being both wizened and childlike. Printed with flair by Studio PM, the work shares a kinship with Shaman’s Trance (1998 #25), another of Sheojuk’s forays into playful strangeness. One can’t help but wish to have witnessed her at work, grinning, perhaps, while dreaming up such brilliantly odd creations.
