This composition is a remarkable example of how traditional Inuit materials and carving techniques can be used to reflect modern life in the North. Carved from stone and antler, materials rich historical significance, the snow machine is rendered with meticulous detail, its functional wheels introducing an element of surprise and movement. Paired with a dog, the work immediately signals its subject: hunting. These two elements, dog and machine, are essential to life on the land, and their presence evokes a familiar northern reality. What’s most striking, however, is what’s missing. The hunter is absent, yet his presence is deeply felt. The specificity of the objects is enough to conjure the figure, making this a portrait by proxy.
