Collectors, traders, missionaries, and anthropologists played key roles in recontextualizing these utilitarian items as art. Originally made for food preparation and storage, the bowls were gradually produced for sale, often to meet tourist and art market demand. Though their function shifted, the bowls retained their traditional materials and techniques, becoming vessels not only of physical use but of cultural expression, adaptation, and the layered meanings of exchange.Provenance
