We have spoken before about Shuvinai Ashoona’s earlier pen and ink drawings, usually beautifully detailed depictions of landscapes and traditional life in the north. These scenes can have a stark black & white feel to them thanks to heavy black pen and markers carving out the structures and stones across the page. Here, however, in Untitled (Camp Scene) we have a softer depiction by Shuvinai, both in application and subject matter. The three structures are almost gently placed in the landscape, their presence not as foreign to the environment as one would expect. Gentle rises in the tundra surround them, as well as a rock cairn carefully placed in the background, and all feels organic, yet in its place. There is a serenity in this scene, aided by a softer hand on the work.
