In Sanikiluaq, bird carvings were so prevalent that the 1981 exhibition catalogue for Belcher Island / Sanikiluaq at the Winnipeg Art Gallery featured an introduction by ornithologist Spencer G. Sealy. He noted that local artists rendered avian species with remarkable accuracy. This Swimming Loon is a prime example of such a feat: its spotted throat identifies the species, while its sleek, streamlined body, forward-set eyes, and upright neck suggest it is swimming. The work is not just beautifully stylized, it’s observational, informed, and true to life.
