Located on the mainland of Nunavut, west of the Melville Peninsula, Kugaaruk, known in Inuktitut as Arviligjuaq, or “the great bowhead whale habitat,” has long sustained its people through the bounty of the sea. The rhythms of marine life are deeply woven into the community’s traditions and artistic expression. Kugaaruk carvers are especially known for their small, finely detailed ivory works, prized by collectors for their intricacy and portability. In the present work, the unnamed artist honours this tradition, depicting a hunter encountering a seal.
