ESTIMATE: $3,000 — $5,000James Houston’s ambitious vision for printmaking in Cape Dorset might have remained just that, a vision, were it not for the influence of Josephie Pootoogook, a respected camp leader from Ikirasak whose early involvement grounded the project in local respect and enthusiasm. Pootoogook's affinity for naturalism found elegant expression in both relief and stencil techniques. In this work, his composition is technically striking: the central figure is rendered in crisp stonecut, standing out boldly against a stencilled background, a format that predates the more homogenized inking style that would later define Cape Dorset prints. The figure itself is hulking, direct, and commanding, looking straight through the picture plane. It’s a portrait that feels both formal and deeply personal: a leader depicted by a leader, carved into permanence.
