In Proud Grandmother with Grandchild, Matiusie Iyaituk captures a moment of immense, everyday tenderness through monumental form. The work transforms a private, intimate gesture into a powerful physical presence. The composition is bold yet remarkably economical: the large, sheltering body of the grandmother arcs protectively around the child, whose tiny face peers out from the amautiq. Smooth planes, minimal detailing, and carefully inset faces in contrasting stone give the sculpture a feeling of compressed energy, as though the entire world has narrowed to the bond between two people. It is a masterclass in weight, volume, and human connection.
