Models or scenes from daily life, miniature versions of an everyday object, and the various flora and fauna of the north became regular subject matter for carvers across Kugaaruk, a tradition that was continued well into the 1970s. These works are very appealing, not only for being a more portable final product, but also since tusk as a material lends itself to have an intrinsically precious quality that enhances the overall effect of works on a small scale. While some artists would be satisfied with minimizing and simplifying details in these smaller works, Solomon Iqquiyuituq adds layers of detail and expression to his figures, bringing life to his tiny scenes. Here, each dog has its own character, as does the man shouting at them while a bird floats atop them all, observing the scene.
