While it is not uncommon for an argillite pole to feature a naturalistic finial as the top figure, it is unusual for it to be the primary figure on a pole. The large sea lion on top of this pole is depicted in a quasi-naturalistic fashion that recalls argillite figural groups, particularly in the use of stippling to represent fur on the sea lion. The bear is depicted with large claws and teeth, in the grisly act of killing and eating a human.
