These were not meant to be seen by others. They were personal, secretive weapons of spiritual warfare, believed to carry the power to kill. In the early 20th century, the carving of small tupilak figures began in East Greenland, transforming these once-private ritual objects into tangible expressions of memory. By the 1930s, the practice had spread to West Greenland. This particular example, carved in caribou antler rather than sperm whale tooth, holds both cultural resonance and practical appeal. Its material makes it legally exportable, opening it to collectors beyond Canada’s borders while maintaining a link to the older traditions from which it evolved.
Provenance
