Charlie Johnson is a Kwakwaka’wakw carver from Kingcome Inlet, BC, who creates masks, rattles, and plaques in a Southern Kwagiulth style. This mask depicts a kingfisher, a highly specialized bird renowned for its skill in fishing and capturing prey along the edge of lakes and rivers. Johnson has captured the essence of the kingfisher here, with bold grey, red, and blue paint, a massive, slightly curved beak, and a blue crest emerging from the top of its head. The mask is framed with twisted cedar bark rope and bundles of shredded bark.
