The Waasgo, depicted here as a Wolf with long claws and a Killer Whale dorsal fin, is inlaid with three pieces of catlinite, also known as pipestone. Catlinite is a red argillite stone originating in the Great Lakes region but has been a popular inlay material for Haida argillite carvings since the 1980s. The distinctive, bead-like shape of the catlinite inlays and somewhat legible initials on the verso may help identify the maker of this piece.
