Featured in several Cape Dorset Annual Print Collections during their second decade of releases, Keeleemeeoomee Samualie has influenced multiple generations of artists, including her granddaughter, noted contemporary artist Nicotye Samayualie. Often drawn from personal experience and childhood memories, Keeleemeeoomee’s printwork tended to have a playful manner, and never shied away from repeating patterns and themes. to guide her art practice, filtering her experiences into her work in a playful manner. Here we are treated to a pod of whales being chased by several hunters in a boat, some almost falling over themselves within the vessel. A sweeping spray of oars reaches out from either side like fronds or feathers, pulling the men along toward their hopefully eventual catch. Despite the spears at the ready, there is the slightest of smiles on one of the whales, perhaps a knowing look that the hunters won’t be successful this day.
