Usually when one hears the name “Johnny Inukpuk,” images of Mothers and their children, both at work and at play, are usually the first thing to come to mind. Larger pieces with a defined presence, and distinctly human. That immediate notion of what Johnny’s work is makes this Swimming Duck all the more charming: smaller (comparatively), and charmingly simple, Swimming Duck floats on unseen water with an ambling speed. The dark stone and minimalist details could give the illusion of a duck’s silhouette, perhaps as he may be seen on the water in the early morning in Inukjuak. This duck may well be a welcome reprieve for the artist, an enjoyment of the simpler things and a quiet visualization of what surrounds his home.
