The deep red hull grounds the composition, while the intricate rigging of ladders, chains, and taut lines rise in a lattice of black against the open sky. At its centre, a lone figure ascends the deck. His brimmed seaman’s cap, a small but deliberate detail, identifies him as a whaler and anchors the scene within the history of Arctic commercial hunting. Above, a trio of birds drifts across the sky, their soft, organic forms contrasting with the vessel’s mechanical angularity.
