Many works throughout Mary Pudlat’s career are recognizable for their joyous and spirited depictions of figures and animals. Aspects of a more traditional life in the north are present, and Travel by Dog Team is no exception; though simple in hue and presentation, there are small touches of life and personality in the work. The dogs, lovingly coloured with variating tones, almost bounce from the paper with their energy, and their lines slack ahead of the sled before the next run. The riders are preparing for the journey, either by getting settled for the ride or stowing away what is precious. Another delightful signature of Mary’s work is the frequently present teapot, a staple of northern living, which can be seen here tied to the back of the sled, perhaps for easy access at a moment’s notice!
