The pendant to the left depicts an Eagle in profile and was carved by Ed Russ, a member of the renowned Russ family of argillite carvers. Russ, who was celebrated for his complex argillite designs, imbued his pendants with a sculptural depth that is rarely seen in jewellery of this kind. The higher relief and contoured features of his designs create an almost three-dimensional quality that is unique to his work.
The second pendant, in the centre, features an Eagle with spread wings in a circular format. The pendant was carved by Claude Davidson, who was the grandson of Charles Edenshaw (1839-1920) and father of Robert Davidson (b. 1946), placing him firmly into one of the most important Canadian artistic lineages.
The third pendant, on the right, is another finely carved work by Ed Russ. This pendant features the frontal view of an Eagle, rendered in near perfect bilateral symmetry. Based on its shape and the orientation of the Eagle design, it’s likely that this pendant is meant to reference a frontlet or dancing headdress.
