It is carved from richly hued green stone, the kind with a soft matte finish that artists in Kinngait so often favoured in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The choice of subject feels especially telling. Known for his careful chronicling of Inuit life and history, Kiakshuk here turned his attention to the oil lamp, a form that is both practical and symbolic. It is as if he sought to preserve not only the stories of people but also the objects that shaped their daily survival.Provenance
