Koomwartok Ashoona was the son of noted graphic artist Pitseolak Ashoona (c. 1904–1983). Of Pitseolak’s 17 children, 11 either died in childhood or were adopted out. Of the remaining six,...Koomwartok Ashoona was the son of noted graphic artist Pitseolak Ashoona (c. 1904–1983). Of Pitseolak’s 17 children, 11 either died in childhood or were adopted out. Of the remaining six, four went on to become among the most important Kinngait artists, particularly sons Qaqaq and Kiugak, while daughter Napachie also achieved recognition as a graphic artist. Created before he developed his mature style, this elegant sculpture of a scraping tool is carved from the striking green serpentine stone that had only recently been discovered. Although unsigned, the original label still affixed to the sculpture identifies the artist, the community of origin, the date, and even the original selling price.Provenance
