Schooner-rigged and later fitted with motors, they were distributed by the Hudson’s Bay Company. Durable and adaptable, they combined European and Indigenous boatbuilding traditions, enabling greater mobility around Hudson Bay. Although less frequently depicted in Inuit art than qajaqs or umiaqs, whaleboats remain an important chapter in Inuit maritime history. Though not a prolific artist, Lukasi Qavauk created a number of fine works that demonstrate both his own talent and the ingenuity of Ivujivik artists.Provenance
