Although this bear’s squat proportions and absence of teeth render him less ferocious and more endearing, his mismatched eyes demand our attention. In Inuit cosmology, the angakkuq (shaman) is believed to traverse different realms through trance or ritual, moving fluidly between the tangible world and the domain of spirits. To do so, he must possess a vision expansive enough to perceive both realities simultaneously. It is tempting, then, to read the bear’s two differently coloured eyes as a metaphor for this dual sight, a reminder of the ability to see more than one world at once.
