This Crouched Arctic Hare, carved in the late 1950s, exemplifies striking realism through its compact and attentive form. The hare is shown in a moment of repose, its body crouched low with limbs drawn beneath, ears laid back, and head inclined forward, a posture that conveys at once a sense of rest and watchful attentiveness. The matte green stone enhances the naturalistic presence, its surface suggesting the softness of fur despite the solidity of the medium. Subtle contours define the musculature and haunches, giving weight and vitality to the animal. As an early work, it demonstrates both sensitivity of observation and a refined command of material, creating a sculpture that is modest in scale yet resonant in presence, which foreshadows the works to come by the artist, Kananginak Pootoogook.
