The present model poles were likely created for the tourist market in Seattle, Victoria, or Vancouver. Nuu-chah-nulth carvers were especially active in producing such works, continuing a tradition of model pole making established along the Northwest Coast since the nineteenth century.
The pole on the left depicts a Thunderbird with outstretched wings above a human figure holding a mask, mounted on a circular alder base. It also features a painted humanoid face on its chest and serpent faces in profile on the wings that, when viewed together, create a Sisiutl image. The pole on the right depicts a Thunderbird with an Orca painted on its chest, a Wolf with human faces in its ears, and a Human Head or Mask. The painting on this pole is particularly bright and well preserved.
