The two dogs in the foreground are "seeing the spirits", a common occurrence in the dark of a winter night. We see what the dogs see through the eyes of a man who knows well both spirits, and dogs. Pudlo's bold interpretations, from "Thoughts of Walrus", 1961, "Eagle Carrying Man", 1963, and now "Spirits", make the world of his imagination significant, if not entirely real. 1
