Thomas Sivuraq’s stonecutting is highly accomplished, giving clarity to each form, the labour of carving evident in the dense network of linework that completes the scene. At the centre, an owl with piercing yellow eyes commands attention, flanked by narwhals and hunters. Around it, figures heightened by stencil cluster in rhythmic balance, their sharp contours set against a swirling blue ground that fills the surface with restless motion.
This image is reproduced in Helga Goetz, The Inuit Print, (1977, pl. 130, p. 220.) Goetz writes, "The subject here could have biblical origins, or it may derive from Inuit legend Knud Rasmussen reports 'an old, old story' of the flood (1931: 209). The stonecut print reproduces the vibrant colour of Annatuusi's exuberant drawing."
Provenance
Collection of John and Joyce Price, Seattle.
