This small ivory carving almost certainly captures the likeness of a young girl with remarkable tenderness. Her cheeks are so rounded and full they nearly dominate the face, softening her expression into one of gentle contentment, while her slightly agape mouth suggests she may be speaking. The tiny hands pressed to her sides and the inward turn of her toes hint at a pigeon-toed stance, reinforcing her youthful posture. The work’s formal qualities — smoothly polished surfaces, delicate incisions, and compact proportions — combine to create a figure that feels both intimate and carefully observed.
