We have been privileged to have a few amautiq over the years, and their presence in the office allows for deeper viewing into the marvel that is their construction and design. Varying broadly according to region, and then more acutely according to personal preferences and style, the general form of an amauti has been developed over centuries to best suit the climate and the wearer. This model, lovingly hand stitched together and carefully decorated, shows in delightful detail some highlights of an amauti. The broad shoulders of this coat, on both the heavy inner layer and the lighter outer layer, have been cut to keep the seams away from the points of the shoulders where constant movement would weaken seams. The hood is cut from four separate pieces which helps to create the curved shape (without wasting material), and has a braided pull that the wearer can use to pull the hood back up to their head with one hand. Throughout both the layers, slim ric rac has been hand stitched down, following the gentle curves of the hemlines. A beaded butterfly on the chest, small pieces of beaded fringe on the coat tails, and a fur trim along the hood add a final set of flourishes to this work, further making this a treasured piece of textile art rather than just a model.
