Saggiak was a significant figure in early Cape Dorset art and had no fewer than four sculptures in the landmark Sculpture/Inuit exhibition. His works are included in most major museum collections and featured in nearly every book on Inuit art, yet Saggiak was far less prolific than his contemporaries. Indeed, he produced only four graphic works between 1962 and 1965, and his sculptures, usually depicting subjects from the Inuit spirit world, rarely appear on the secondary market. We cannot recall seeing another Saggiak sculpture carved from Andrew Gordon Bay marble. The marble deposit was discovered in the early 1970s and, being significantly harder than serpentine, must have been quite a challenge for the elderly Saggiak to carve. Despite the hardness of the raw material, Saggiak’s Snowy Owl Shaman is both powerful and elegant.
