The mother clasps both the fingers and shoulder of her child, steadying the small body as it learns balance. Her stance is grounded, carved with weight in the legs and firmness in the feet, while the child’s lifted step conveys hesitation and effort.
The stone surface alternates between polished smoothness and roughened textures, catching light differently across the figures. Incised details mark the beaded parka trim, mitts, and boots, evoking the textures of fabric and fur. The rounded faces lean slightly toward one another, emphasizing intimacy and care. This sculpture transforms a fleeting gesture into permanence. This lovely, rather sizeable carving preserves both the physicality of the act and the bond between mother and child.Provenance
Collection of John and Joyce Price, Seattle.
