Like the pole from Lot 46 (this sale), this model pole was likely made by a Makah or Nuu-chah-nulth carver working in Washington State. Although this pole is not by the same maker as the pole in Lot 46, it shows clear influence between the two carvers and reflects a local style that is very consistent and distinctive. The bottom figures on both poles are excellent examples of this connection. This tall, elegant pole is carved in red cedar and painted in old green, black, white, red, and yellow paints. The pole features, from the top: Heron, Human, and Raven, with a monoxylous pedestal mounted onto a beveled base. Behind the legs of the Heron and the Raven is piercing that implies a structure to the pole that adds to the complexity of the sculpture.
