It was Pudlo, however, who remained fascinated by muskoxen and featured the animal in dozens of prints and drawings from the 1970s until his death. Whereas most muskoxen are depicted in profile, Our Massive Friend presents a head-on view of the formidable Umingmak (“the bearded one”). The subject appears almost impossibly wide and seems to pat its belly in a gesture of contentment. A special hats off to Pee Mikkiga for what must have been the daunting task of cutting the print stone to do justice to the magnificent guard hairs.Provenance
