He began carving and engraving ivory around 1950, creating both sculptural...Davidee Itulu is arguably the greatest and certainly the best-known "scrimshaw" artist in the history of Inuit art [1]. He began carving and engraving ivory around 1950, creating both sculptural and engraved works. For years, he worked alongside his cousin, the great Cape Dorset artist Sheokjuk Oqutaq, who periodically lived and carved in Kimmirut. Itulu’s works are renowned for their spectacular depictions of Arctic wildlife, as evidenced by the present example.
