Naujaat can be variously translated as "seagull resting place" or "seagulls' nesting place," named after a cliff to the north where migrating seagulls make their nests every summer. There are also approximately one hundred species of birds in the area (along with the wide variety of animals that make the region their home), including gyrfalcons and peregrine falcons. The falcon’s regular presence around town likely gave Jean-Marie Ivalutannar Oksokitok the inspiration for this piece, and they have skillfully rendered the bird’s menacing glare. Carefully carved into some local stone, the marble’s minerals give the illusion of a peregrine falcon’s striped and spotted feathers, ruffled against an unseen arctic breeze.
