The cedar bark and spruce root are tightly twined, their surfaces still textured with the memory of the forest, while dyed grass false embroidery adds a subtle interior shimmer. Painted pigments—deep black, cool blue, and sea-green with traces of red—animate the exterior with the image of a baleen whale, its jaw distended in the drama of bubble feeding. At the crown, a shallow indentation evokes the whale’s blowhole, a small but vivid touch of realism. Inside, a finely woven headband presses gently against the brow, ensuring the hat would once have sat firmly and comfortably on its wearer, marrying utility with artistry.
