Napachie Sharky was born in 1971 to an artistic family that includes his older brother Toonoo Sharky. Like Toonoo, Napachie is renowned for his finely detailed stone carvings, but in a far more realistic manner than his brother. Napachie has a skillful hand in depicting birds in particular, as can be seen with this Startled Bird, with feathers and wings splayed out to show movement and vitality in a strong pose. His meticulous attention to detail and smooth, polished surfaces further attract the eye, making this small work a small treasure to behold.
