Among the myriad artists who worked in the medium, Davidee Itulu (1929–2006) was perhaps the finest and best known. While this delicately incised tusk closely resembles Itulu’s work in both subject and style, so many talented artists experimented with the medium that an Itulu attribution would be aspirational at best. The crisp etching and elegant, stratified design demonstrate great skill and keen observation. For us, the proverbial “chef’s kiss” is the Janus-like smiling/growling polar bear summit. Superb!ProvenanceA Toronto Collection.
