Luke Anowtalik is renowned for his evocative sculptures in stone and antler, as well as the drawings he created later in life. Born near Ennadai Lake and raised within the Ihalmiut (Caribou Inuit) tradition, his early life, marked by displacement and survival, deeply informs his creative voice. Anowtalik’s work in stone is dense and monumental, whereas his antler works are decidedly playful. This example is more finished than his “minimalist” antler dolls and features far more detail than is common in the artist’s oeuvre, yet the articulated arms nod to his sense of humour.
