This tiny basketry-covered bottle features openwork and blue glass beads. The small blue beads reference Russian cobalt trade beads, which served as historically important trade goods in Alaska Native cultures and remain treasured heirlooms for many families. The Aleut practice of covering bottles with basketry for sale to tourists dates to at least the late 19th century, and the micro scale of this bottle highlights the extreme skill and dexterity of its maker.
Provenance
Collection of John & Joyce Price, Seattle, WA.
