As friends, they often worked together, and while their works are stylistically distinct, they clearly influenced each other. Tiktak is known for his rounded minimalist forms, and Kavik for his more expressive figures.
This figure is unmistakably John Kavik in its weight and directness, yet the carving also reveals an attentive regard for space. The openings set between the legs and at the shoulder read as a clear acknowledgement of John Tiktak, whose work is defined by carefully placed voids. Here, however, symmetry is set aside. The body leans, the stance widens, and the arms are held in unequal positions so the figure seems caught mid-gesture. The right forearm arcs over the head, as if to shade the eyes, while the left arm settles close to the torso. Light passes cleanly through the cut-outs, and the grey stone, cool and dense, is worked to a surface that feels worn and hand-smoothed, lending the moment a sense of pause before movement resumes.
