A carver and teacher from Old Massett, Haida Gwaii, Hector Thompson is known for his depictions of famous animals from Haida oral history. In this work we are treated to a frequent character, a killer whale, that is making its leap over one of its aquatic compatriots, a seal. Both figures are carved from sleek black argillite, likely local from further south in Haida Gwaii near Skidegate, and the whale is additionally adorned with pāua shell eyes that glimmer against the black stone. Minimally but intentionally carved, there is movement in the curves and position of these animals, despite their static nature.
