Maternal protection is registered here through decisive means. The larger mother bird rises over her hatchling and draws its long neck in a protective arc, the beak projecting forward like a watchful spear. She forms a dark sheltering mass, while the smaller bird is tucked low beneath, pressed close to the ground. Their outlines interlock so there is no gap between guardian and guarded. Even the bright bands read as a wrapped cloak, circling the back and breast in layered arcs. Around them, pebble-like ovals gather as a soft bed, reinforcing a sense of safe enclosure.
