As with much of his work, the present sculpture by Marc Alikaswa is intimate in scale. The form is compact and softly rounded, the surface left grainy so it catches the light in a fine, almost sandy shimmer. This man has stopped to sit on a stool or stone, settling his weight before lifting his head. Though the features are pared to Alikaswa’s familiar shorthand, a broad facial plane with drilled eyes and mouth that fall into small wells of shadow against smoother stone, the upward tilt of face reads as inward and absorbed, as if his thoughts have drifted beyond his surroundings, into the sky.
