Nuu-chah-nulth baskets have long been a staple of the Northwest Coast curio market. Woven in brightly dyed bear grass and cedar bark, Nuu-chah-nulth baskets often depict whaling scenes and supernatural figures such as sea monsters and thunderbirds. This nicely woven lidded basket likely dates to the mid-20th century and remains in excellent condition for its age. Dyed bear grass is an especially fugitive medium, and even moderate sun exposure can quickly fade baskets back to their natural grass colour, making this colourful example rare and especially fine. This basket features several spiny sea monsters and a whaling scene in bright green, brown, black, tan, and red dyes. The knob-top lid features a multi-coloured geometric pattern, while the bottom of the basket reveals the plaited cedar bark base and the complex spiral pattern of the twined bear grass.
