This carving captures the animal in a moment of primal intensity, its head thrown back in a powerful howl. Compact, muscular limbs convey strength, while soft, rounded features add undeniable charm. The large paws feel powerful, yet plush, while its thick tail curls around its body, appearing soft and full. Crafted from beautiful green stone from Kinngait's halcyon days of carving, the work is smoothed and polished to enhance the natural greenish tones, showcasing a striking balance of texture and form. Notably, this work aligns with two fine contemporaneous Howling Dogs by Kiugak’s fellow artists Kananginak Pootoogook and Iyola Kingwatsiak (see Sculpture / Inuit: Masterworks of the Canadian Arctic, cats. 117 and 125).
