Knees are bent. Elbows draw in close. The head sits just level with the arc of the blind. Every choice in that stance speaks to knowledge of what the moment demands, when movement must be held back and attention narrowed to a single point.
The curved screen does its practical work, masking the hunter from the seal’s line of sight while keeping the hunter’s gaze trained forward. Nothing in the composition is wasted. The figure and the blind form one compact unit, built for waiting.
Carved in the 1960s in Inukjuak, the sculpture is made in a richly variegated stone. Fiery orange and gold tones move across the surface, shifting with the light and giving the form a sense of warmth and depth, even as the subject remains rooted in snow and wind.
