The body is carried close to...In the present work, the legs are deliberately abbreviated and the neck drawn in, so that the animal settles deep into its own weight. The body is carried close to the ground, rounded and ample, with a compact force that reads as comic, then, on a second look, as firmly controlled. These proportions soften the bear’s authority. Height is traded for stoutness. However, for all of its endearment, if you’ll forgive the pun, it bears remembering what the polar bear is: an apex predator, perfectly at home at the top of the Arctic food chain. That this one still registers as lovable is part of Tunglik’s accomplishment.Provenance
