As his manner matured, he returned often to the figure of the mother, shown in the middle of the day’s work, and often with a child or children shown close as she presses on. In this sculpture, the woman bends to the practical task of mending a kamik. Her body is compact and her posture reads with focused intent. Her hands, enlarged beyond natural proportion, carry her work’s emphasis. They make her labour visible, and by their scale suggest the weight of what such labour holds together in a household. From the hood of her amautiq, a child’s cherubic face appears, round and pleased, peering out from the warmth of his or her mother's clothing and love.
