While unsigned, this charming creature is almost certainly by one of the leading Kinngait sculptors of the 1960s. Authorship is hard to pin down, but we wonder whether it may...While unsigned, this charming creature is almost certainly by one of the leading Kinngait sculptors of the 1960s. Authorship is hard to pin down, but we wonder whether it may be by the hand of either Kiugak Ashoona or Kananginak Pootoogook, both of whom produced some wonderful works during this period. It is obvious that the sculptor captured this open-mouthed apex predator in a pose that suggests either panting following a period of exertion or snarling, coiled and ready to pounce. The sculpture is carved from the wonderfully mottled, deep green serpentine quarried throughout much of the 1960s.
